Affiliate Summit: The Day Before

by Lyndon on January 18, 2010

I arrived a few days early for Affiliate Summit to ensure I had adequate time to damage my liver and so that I could attend some of the kick off parties.

I just wanted to throw out a couple of thank you’s and a recap of Saturday.

Saturday was great, it started with drinks at the Rio with several fellow affiliate marketers and led to some great events.

The evening started with dinner at Daniel Bouluds (organized by DK of Purpose Inc.) I finally got to try the world famous burger with Foi Gras and Truffles. It was all that it was cracked up to be. The food, atmosphere, and networking was great. I had the pleasure of meeting and hanging with Robert Drysdale who is widely regarded as one of the best (if not the best) grapplers (Brazilian Jiu Jiutsu) in the world.

Following dinner I played in the charity poker tournament organized by DK and Missy Ward. It was a blast and best of all over $15000.00 was raised for a the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Robert came down to the poker tourny and threw me into some choke holds and ams bars on the poker tables which made for some great photos (will post them later today).

A huge thanks to DK and Missy Ward for organizing these events it was a blast.

Following the poker tourney I hit the Buy.at party at Rain in the Palm. A huge thank to Jim Banks for lining us up and to Buy.at for throwing a bad ass party. They had the top floor booked, the bar open, and everyone was having a blast. Rain was unreal, there were thousands of people inside and there had to be a thousand people waiting outside, trying to desperatly to get in. Paul Oakenfold was on the decks (videos coming soon) and killed it !

All in all it was awesome day with remarkable parties and tons of laughs and was one of those days that makes you feel lucky.

Stay tuned for more…  Pictures and Video to follow

How I won Shoemoney’s Affiliate Summit Contest

by Lyndon on January 12, 2010

A lot of people (especially non-technical ones) have asked me how I managed to win such a kick ass prize/trip.

I actually worked really hard at this and tried to work every angle I could.  Below is a detailed explanation of how I used social media, the power of friendship, creativity, and elbow grease to win this thing.  I’ve also highlighted mistakes I made along the way.

Write the blog post/entry

I tried to write a blog post that proved I would be fun and could be made fun of, briefly addressed why it would be good for me professionally, and addressed all the judges personally demonstrating I was somewhat familiar with them or had at least taken the time to look them up if I wasn’t.

I spent a lot of time linking and making the post complete.

I didn’t go too crazy or exaggerate, I mean there are 7 judges, some are married, and one is female.  Some of the other entries were really over the top and I just couldn’t picture everyone relating.

My Mistake:

I posted a little too early and my format (specifically the way I addressed the judges) was copied by almost every entry – I don’t even think it was the best way to do it but I digress.

Once selected it came down to voting.

The initial email

I sent an email to a group of my closest friends (they all knew I had entered the contest).  I explained that I was a finalist and asked them to vote right away and forward onto their contacts adding a personal note to the recipients.  I called my friends and asked them to reply all as our group of friends feeds off of each other’s energy.

Twitter

I let some of the people I have developed real relationships with know what was going on and they tweeted right away and a few retweets followed.

After a few days Shoemoney posted an update on Twitter and the race was close.  It seemed like the votes we could drive were going to have a large effect on the end result.

This meant it was time to get creative:

Video Time

I decided I was going to add some video to the entry thinking the casual visitors might check it out and vote for me.  I wanted it to be fun so I explained why viewers should vote for me and then I shot gunned a beer.  I caught up with @Kritsy on gTalk and she was kind enough to give me some honest feedback.  The concept was solid, parts were great, but I dragged throughout the middle and really wasn’t being myself.  She told me to it again and as bonus I’d get to have another drink.

At precisely the same time the light bulb went off for both of us, do a bunch of takes and then post them all rather than just best one.  And so I worked at it, drink after drink and take after take.

It proved to be a valuable exercise as the videos received a fair amount attention of Twitter and Facebook.

Enter John Chow

I’ve been following John and Jeremy for a long time.  I’ve watched them compete against each other (to see who cold get the most RSS subscribers in an allotted time frame) and promote ZK in the Internet Marketer of the year contest.

It only seemed natural I enlist the services of John Chow and so I contacted him about the possibility of a sponsored post.  It seemed like a good fit, the Shoemoney and Johnchow audience is similar and John Chow has a big following (71000 RSS subscriber and 51000 twitter followers).

I felt it would be a solid investment as it would likely bring in a lot of votes.  I figured if I lost there would still be some value in the links from John Chow and some of the attention it generated.

Five bills later I had a post up on John Chow promoting me and I was feeling pretty good.

I almost when onto sponsored tweets and tried to buy a tweet from Shoemoney himself but I assumed he would decline in for conflict of interest reasons.  Probably should have done it for the potential attention/linkbait anyway.

A wider Audience

I sent a variation of my initial email to a wider audience asking for more votes.  I reminded a few people close to me to bug their friends.  I reminded my friends to vote from their work computers as well.

A twitter update from Shoemoney showed me widening the gap and I was started to feeling comfortable but @spryd who helped a lot reminded me not become complacent.

The Vote For Lyndon Facebook Stream

The Vote For Lyndon Facebook Stream

Facebook Chat

Facebook chat was the money maker.  I have personally met everyone on my friends list so when I asked for a 3 second favor everyone was quick to respond.  I am guessing some loved the idea of helping but most were curious what I needed. For two days straight (and I mean morning, noon, evening, and middle of night) I kept Facebook chat open and hit every single friend that logged on for a vote.  I’d say 95% said no problem and quickly voted.

Facebook Messages

A lot of people choose to “appear offline” so I decided I would send them Facebook messages.  I started by sending messages to groups of friends, basically selecting everyone in alphabetical order.  I knew this was the lazy approach but I was tired.  I thought about and decided it wasn’t a time to be lazy.  I started sending individual notes to anyone I thought would be a good “lead” I went in alphabetical order for a few hours.  At one point I received a message from Facebook saying my behavior was suspicious and may be annoying to users.  At that point I decided to slow down.  Some people I had contacted through chat thought the message might be spam/spyware and so I did my best to proactively convince readers the message was not spam.

Facebook Wall Posting

I posted the link on my wall and asked a few others to do the same.  Before I knew it my story was started to take the Facebook stream by storm, especially within my group of high school friends (in the 28 years I’ve been alive I’ve lived within 5 kilometers of the house I was born in so my junior high and high school relationships have been lifelong).

Here are a few screen shots:

Blastomycosis.ca

A few years ago my dog was diagnosed with a rare but often fatal disease called blastomycosis.  When she was sick I spent a fair amount of time on a very small forum seeking help and helping others.  I reached out to the community for votes and they helped out.  This worked because the community is small, my name was familiar, and we all have shared a common struggle and frequently do what we can to help each other.   In most forums posting that message would have been a recipe for a banning.

The Last Push

Finally I sent a text message to about 30 of my friends and asked them to vote on the smart phones and to forward the text on even if they had already voted on their computers.

And there you have it, I worked very hard, and I worked many angles from twitter, to chat, to forums, to text messages, to telephone calls, and the list goes on.  In the end it was worth it the links are great, the prize is huge, and the contacts that will be made are golden!

Again, a huge thanks to everyone who mentioned me on Twitter and Facebook.

Oh, one lesson for us all, there seemed to be a correlation between the input (effort) and output (votes).  I wonder if the same formula could be applied to Website Monetization input (effort) might equal output (cash). :D

I’ve spent a lot of time in the University of Winnipeg on both sides of the desk – as a student and an instructor.

They’ve recently added a Konami code to their website.  In the event you don’t remember or you weren’t one of the millions of people that spent hundreds of hours kicking ass and taking names playing Contra on NES (the original Nintendo Entertainment System) the Konami code is a “cheat code”.

Recently several websites have added some functionality that can be unlocked with the use of the code. Facebook added a Konami code that caused your mouse cursor to change, I don’t think they were the first, but I believe it’s what is what caused everyone to jump on the bandwagon.

Anyway, it’s great to see the University of Winnipeg getting creative with their marketing efforts by embracing Twitter, Facebook, and embedding a konami code on their website.  I’ve seen a lot of students and staff “buzzing” online about the game and their high scores so it’s obviously driving some traffic and creating a little excitement and awareness for them.

So what’s the Easter egg?

  1. Head on over to the University of Winnipeg Department of Continuing Education
  2. Enter the Konami Code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A)
  3. Enjoy your unlocked surprise (a classic video game with a characters from the University of Winnipeg)

Enjoy, and leave a comment if you can beat my high score.

My Goals for 2010

by Lyndon on January 6, 2010

Goals for 2010

Goals for 2010

I was going to post this between Christmas and New Years but I was tied up with festivities and concentrating on Shoemoney’s ASW contest.

My favorite part about the holiday season is thinking about all the goals I am going to set for the upcoming year.

I always set ambitious goals, after all it’s a bloody goal – something I hope to achieve not something that I am already doing.  I don’t want my life to be a little better.  I want the life of everyone around me, including me, to be a lot better.

With that being said my goals for 2010 are:

  1. Earnings of $1K a day through the monetization of web sites by the end of the year
  2. Get/Stay in shape.  Keep “bad” weight off and put “good” weight on (ultimately I’d like to lost 5-10 bad pounds and gain 5 good pounds)
  3. Workout 4-5 days a week
  4. Continue to be a great friend, uncle, and family member, and dog owner
  5. Wear my seatbelt all the time (when I am in a moving car ;) )
  6. Pay off all consumer debt
  7. Stop hitting “sleep” on the alarm clock
  8. Wake up at 5:45 am
  9. Be a productive employee
  10. Be a productive entrepreneur
  11. Sleep between 6-9 hours every night
  12. Run the half marathon with minimal training (I’m not going to put on “good weight” running all the time)
  13. Post on my blog every once in a while
  14. Keep better books

There I said it.  You read it.  I will follow up monthly to let you know how I am doing to remind myself to keep on keepin on.

A Mostly Personal Look at 2009

by Lyndon on January 5, 2010

A brief,  mostly personal, look at a mostly awesome 2009…

2009 was a crazy year (just the way I like it).  There were a lot of highlights and a couple of low-lights :) Sadly, I didn’t accomplish some things I had hoped to professionally, but I certainly had a lot of fun and am super excited for “twenty-ten”!

January was cold, cold, cold – I mean like freeze-your-ass-off-record-breaking-I-wish-I-was-dead-cold. I spent a week in Toronto where it was a little more mild, concentrated on work, and booked a phenomenal trip to the Mayan Riviera, Mexico with my now ex-girlfriend where we relaxed, partied, sun bathed, and laughed.

Upon my return I decided it was finally time to hit an internet marketing conference and so I registered for Pubcon Austin.  As excited as kid in candy shop, I signed up on twitter and started connecting with others that would be attending.  I had a blast meeting great people and learning and came back refreshed.

Partying at Pubcon Austin

Partying at Pubcon Austin

April, as I recall it was uneventful, I was glued to the computer motivated as heck from my time at Pubcon though I am not sure I accomplished anything.

The beginning of summer saw my relationship with my fabulous ex crumble which was a big adjustment.  I spent my time concentrating at my new position at work which has been awesome, at the gym, and on partying.  Unfortunately this makes most of summer a really expensive blur where little was accomplished but an unreal amount of fun was had.

Weather wise, Winnipeg had its worst summer in history. My brother convinced me to go to Hawaii in August and I spent a week surfing, skydiving, swimming with sharks, and jumping off cliffs.  Great times!

Surfing in Hawaii

There was a huge ray of sunshine in August though – my sister had the first child in the family – an amazing little girl Katelyn Morrison.  She is amazing, I love that little girl so much,  she’s had a pretty huge effect on me but I won’t get to gushy here :) .

Lyndon and Katelyn

Fall arrived and my beat up body was very happy.  I finally got back to work (I hadn’t even signed onto twitter in months:)) and my buddies from Pubcon Austin convinced me to attend Pubcon Las Vegas.  Pubcon Las Vegas resulted in excessive amounts of fun and alcohol.

Katelyn and Bella

And here I am in December, wrapping up the year, looking back, feeling great, and terribly terribly excited about what 2010 will bring.  I’ve set big goals which you can read about in the next few days!

So 2009 was a year of fun and travel.  2010 will be year of fun, travel, and a lot of work.  How was you year?

Mama Reid Shotguns a Beer for Christa Watson

by Lyndon on January 3, 2010

@ChristaWatson mentioned that she was disappointed that she wasn’t going to make it to Affiliate Summit West (ASW) even if it was only to catch up with her friends. And so I’ve been the devil on her shoulder insisting that she should just go.

In response to my original video post where I promised that I’d shotgun a beer on request at later date Christa and @Kristy insisted that my mom shotgun a beer with me. The deal was that Christa immediately would book a flight to ASW if we made it happen. It wasn’t easy but I convinced Mama Reid (as Christa refers to her).

One more thing – I still don’t know if I am going to get to go. I am in a contest over at Shoemoney.com for a pass, flight, hotel, $2000 to lay-down on one hand of black jack, and access to exclusive parties. Please vote for Lyndon so I can meet Christa in person :)

Enjoy the video (yep I am a nerd). Oh yeah, one more thing. This isn’t my normal behavior for a Sunday (nor is it my mothers :D )

Update: Final day of voting for a trip to ASW:Please Vote For Lyndon by Clicking Here.
It will take you no longer than 5 seconds. No registering or signing up required. Get me there with @ChristaWatson

Lyndon gets drunk begging for bids

by Lyndon on December 31, 2009

So at the recommendation of some (imaginary) friends I decided to do a video blog explaining why you should vote for me (LYNDON) in Shoemoney’s Affiliate Summit West. My original (non-video) entry is here that had me selected as a finalist is here.

It’s the first time I have ever video blogged and so I tried to perfect it – the first one is boring, the second one has mistakes, the third one I am wasted, and by the forth I am shooting tequila.

View them here:

Take 1 (I’m Shy and Boring in this One):

Take 2 (A little buzzed):

Take 3 (Getting Wasted):

Take 4 (Tequila Time):

Update: I’ve made it to the Final 5! Please Vote For Lyndon by Clicking Here.
It will take you no longer than 5 seconds. No registering or signing up required.

Leave a comment to let me know if you voted for me :) . Should I win I will be sure to bust out some live blogging, photo blogging, and tweets to keep everyone up to date on the adventures.

Down to the Short Strokes

by Lyndon on December 27, 2009

I’ve made it to the Final 5! Please Vote For Me by Clicking Here.It will take you no longer than 5 seconds. No registering or signing up required.

For once I am not talking about an adult’s only film. Nope, I’ve made it the final 5 in Shoemoney’s Affiliate Summit Rockstar contest.

A lot is at stake and I really really want to win. Like bad. It’s not about the pass, or the flight, or the cash – it’s about rolling with and partying with some of the industries leaders. Those who know me, know that I live to party socialize. I need to win this.

Here is the haul:

  • 1 Platinum pass to Affiliate Summit (by Affiliate Summit)
  • 3 Nights hotel paid in full (by Affiliate Summit)
  • Airfare – up to $500 in airfare reimbursement
  • Roll with Shoemoney to some super badass private parties
  • Either $1000 cash or $2000 to bet on one hand/roll (by Azoogle Ads)

Do me a favor and vote for me here.

Leave a comment to let me know you have voted so I can find a way to express my gratitude.

Thanks for your help!

By the way my entry is here: Why I should Win Shoemoney’s Affiliate Summit Contest
